Fusion.net, which is part of Disney-ABC and Univision is a news, pop culture and satire TV and digital network. They wanted to create a website, designed as a “second screen experience” for the 2014 Brazil Word Cup, to be hosted on WordPress.com VIP. The FusionSoccer site needed to look good and would be heavily interactive with rapidly changing multimedia content and live data feeds.
The size and speed of the project required project management, coding and design expertise from the Human Made team with Scott, Matt and Paul all involved as well as our front-end guru Steff. The fast-moving nature of the site had some particular technical and design challenges.

One of the distinctive features of the site is the amount of video content, including live video streaming. This required some bespoke development to integrate the various video sources including Youtube and Ooyala. Fusion.net has a TV show called The Soccer Gods which shows live daily episodes on the site each day. In addition there are archived episodes of the show, past and present match highlights and news video content. An additional complication was that some of the video content needed to contain adverts. This required integration with the advert server so that the advertising content linked in smoothly and seamlessly.
Live data and news
There is also a lot of real-time content provided on the site to keep users informed and engaged. To ensure that match data and news is up to the minute, the site links to various third party news feeds which required bespoke development to integrate the feed data. The WordPress VIP Liveblog add-on allows live updating for play by play match commentary.
Working with Human Made is very easy because they accommodate our schedule and our workflow. They have been very responsive to our tight timescale and last minute enhancements. It has been a pleasure to collaborate so closely, they have felt like part of my team.

The honeycomb – social media
One of the things we are most proud of is the amazing Social section honeycomb. Sharing of content via social media is a vital part of the site. Fusion wanted a way to be able to include a curated version of the social media mentions and highlights. The Fusion editors use ScribbleLive to pull in content relating to their particular hashtags or keywords and decide what to publish on the site. We integrated the ScribbleLive feed into the site and used the social media content to produce the Social honeycomb. This displays visual content from Twitter and Instagram as well as editorial social media posts in a really eye-catching way.
Design and front-end
In order to appeal to their desired market sector, the site had to look and feel just right. Fusion had their own internal design team and Steff helped to translate this into reality, working to very tight timescales. In particular the social media honeycomb was a real technical front-end challenge.
The site was up and running by early June 2014 in good time for the start of the World Cup matches. We continue to work with Fusion on the site as the tournament progresses. Check out the FusionSoccer YouTube preview.
